Brytar is a family‑owned and operated Vancouver Island business with more than 40 years of local roots. Today, the company is led by owner Les Starling, who continues the hands‑on, people‑first approach the business was built on. Brytar has been intentionally shaped as a place where family and teamwork matter—both on and off the job site.
Les now works alongside his children, Bryce Starling and Taryn Starling, each bringing complementary strengths to the business. Together, they operate as a close‑knit, highly collaborative team, combining leadership, field expertise, and operational oversight. That continuity across generations creates stability for clients and a shared commitment to doing things the right way—delivering consistent results while staying true to the values Brytar was founded on.
Les Starling
Building Envelope Specialist
Les Starling is a Victoria-based building envelope specialist with more than 30 years of hands-on experience in insulated wall systems and a variety of exterior claddings. Over the course of his career, he has worked on a wide range of residential, commercial, and multi-family projects throughout Vancouver Island and the Mainland.
Les began working in the construction industry at a young age, learning the Stucco trade alongside his father during summer months. That early start built the foundation for a career defined by practical knowledge, attention to detail, and a strong commitment to quality workmanship.
Today, Les works closely with builders and developers to ensure exterior systems are installed properly on Budget and on time. Born and raised in Victoria, he takes pride in contributing to projects that help shape the local community.
Outside of work, Les enjoys staying active, having played divisional soccer in Victoria for many years, and now spending much of his free time on the golf course with his son Bryce and friends during the summer.
Taryn Starling
Project Coordination & Administration
Born and raised in Victoria, Taryn brings strong organizational skills and a deep connection to the family business. She studied Accounting and Business Management at the University of Victoria, building a solid foundation in financial management and business operations.
Taryn plays an important role in supporting the company’s day-to-day operations. She helps track ongoing projects, prepares project schedules and planning tools, and assists with coordinating upcoming work to ensure projects remain organized and running smoothly.
Outside of Brytar, Taryn is an accomplished equestrian who has been riding since the age of four. She actively competes with her horses in events throughout Canada and the United States.
Bryce Starling
Senior Site Manager
Born and raised in Victoria, Bryce has been part of the construction world since he was 12 years old, when he began working during summer breaks alongside his father. That early exposure laid the foundation for a strong work ethic and a deep understanding of the industry.
Bryce has further developed his skills through the Business Program at Camosun College and by completing a variety of industry-specific courses and training. Today, as Senior Site Manager at Brytar Contracting, he oversees multiple crews and helps ensure each project is completed to the company’s high standards of quality and attention to detail.
Before dedicating himself full-time to the family business, Bryce was also an accomplished athlete. After playing rep hockey in his younger years, he became a professional freestyle mountain biker and competed around the world. In 2018, he stepped away from competitive riding to focus on building his career with Brytar Contracting.
Our History
Brytar’s story began in 1977, when Les’s father founded Starling Plaster and Stucco, earning a strong reputation for quality craftsmanship across Vancouver Island. Les grew up on job sites, working summers alongside his father, and officially took over the business in 1997. In 2000, he formed Brytar, expanding beyond plaster and stucco to become a full building‑envelope and exterior specialist supporting complex residential, commercial, and institutional projects.
As the industry has evolved, so has Brytar. The team actively invests in ongoing learning and advancement, ensuring they stay ahead of changing standards and client expectations. Brytar is a proud VICA member and WorkSafe certified, reflecting a long‑standing commitment to safety, professionalism, and accountability on every project.
